the work. >> in daly city tonight no time to waste. folks are trying to shore up a hillside weakened by a water main break that flooded streets. lyanne melendez has the story. >> reporter: as soon as daylight hit. they begin the job of erosion control, first shoving back mounds of dirt. hay bales to keep the water and debris away from the street and homes once the rain begins. >> we're going to try and sustain it and not create a public nuisance for the neighbors by having more of the muddy water going down the streets. >> this was the scene yesterday in this daly city neighborhood, mud everywhere after a water pipe broke. cars were covered up to their wheels. a few residents were evacuated but eventually allowed back inside. today the department of water and waste resources crews are clearing mud. they want to divert the water into the storm drain. it will help clear the rain of debris. >> if there is something we need to be worried about, they would tell us. they didn't tell us anything yesterday so we think we're safe for now. >> i'm concerned about the park. we have had a beautif

lee, thank you. >>> crews in daly city shifted their focus from cleaning up the muddy mess to prehaven'ting a water main break from getting -- to preventing a water main break from getting worse. they are shoring up a hillside before the rain comes. cbs 5 reporter joe vazquez shows us just exactly what's being done. joe. >> reporter: hay, allen. no, seriously, hay is one way they are using to shore up the hillsides compromised by the mud side. -- mud slide. stacking hay and clearing storm drains, two tasks that have daly city crews hard at work today. the hay is being used to contain the substantial mud still covering nearby hillside park. they will clean that mud up later because right now, they are focused on what they call weatherization making sure the upcoming rainstorms aren't going to do more damage to the neighborhood. it turns out yesterday's mud slide swamped all the storm drains so now workers are having to find them and then dig them out so they can help divert any rain. >> so we're going to take our remote control tv camera to go into the pipe itself and then get to the st

when the ambulance arrived. live in oakland, ken wayne. >>> police in san francisco say a daly city woman has surrendered, and has admitted she is responsible for a hit and run accident involving a bicyclity. it happened monday in the presidio. the woman surrendered last night, after police reported that police were looking for a hit-and-run driver. the cyclist told us he suffered a major concussion. he also lost his bike, which he says was stuck to the front of the vehicle. the damaged bike was later found. police say the woman apologized, but is being charged with felony hit-and- run. her name still hasn't been released. >>> more problems tonight for toyota. the company is recalling hundreds of thousands of prius hybrids. many prius owners are just now hearing about this recall. >> reporter: frank, many toyota customers told us they bought a prius because of its gas mileage and dependability. tonight, school teacher marian mark drove her 2007 prius to the downtown toyota of oakland dealership to get her tires checked. she told us she wasn't aware of the latest recall. >> if there'

coverage now of that huge mess in daly city. we were the first tv crew there after a water main break flooded a neighborhood. tara is live back there with new footage. >> reporter: just a few minutes ago, crews pulled you and they are assessing the damage. p we had a chance to actually take a like up this hill and get a better look at the gaping hole. wow. we were told it's a 20 x 20. it seems closer than that when you are standing. engineers have inspected the hillside and they say it is -- it sa -- it is safe. >> war ar-- we're gonna keep the rains out. keep in the gully area and sustain and keep it there. >> reporter: now, the main break unfolded 45,000 gallons of water, trapping at least a dozen cars in it's link. the. they have this instrument and then are putting it in different spots. right about this spot. that's about four feet into monday -- mud. so they are assessing everything. this is a very, very large area. it's completely opened up. crews are gonna be out here football -- for probably most of the die. >> thank you. >>> we have more details now on names color damage wil

in daly city. a water main break flooded the neighborhood with about 45,000 gallons of water and a whole lot of mud. >> that was my first car, i want to just cry. i can't believe it's like halfway up there and can't even -- can't even get out of it. i don't know how they're going to clean it. it breaks my heart. >> reporter: the water started bushing early -- gushing early this morning. the pipe broke about a mile uphill. as the water poured down, so did the dirt and debris. >> part of what we're doing right now is determining and assessing the safety of the hillside at this point. so there's obviously no immediate threat at this point. but we wanted to get those people evacuated where the flow had occurred keep them out of the area until we can get the debris cleaned up and so on. >> reporter: officials tell us the pipe is more than 80 years old and that age is likely to blame. >> it's going to disrupt everything now for a while. and we don't even know when we can get back and check on the stuff and things like that. >> reporter: four massive vacuum trucks are working fast. to suck most
